The trail starts at the parking lot at the corner of Mansell St and Visitation Ave in the Excelsior. Sizable rock slates with engraved arrows show the direction at pretty much every turn. Head west from the parking lot, to enjoy views of the Bay and San Bruno Mountains.

The trail moves along the upper border of the golf course, and stays clear of the sketchy parts of Sunnydale. At the western edge of McLaren Park, turn right and cross Mansell St. Continue until you hit John F Shelley Dr. Turn left to the parking lot and note a narrow paved path that leads up to the blue water tower. This landmark is visible all over the city, and accordingly offers a great 180 view of Downtown, Bernal Height and Glen Park from that highest point.

Follow the dirt path parallel to John F Shelley Dr going north-east, make a right at the playground and picnic area and follow the path uphill. The path leads past Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and further up through a wooded area back to the trailhead at the parking lot.
